A heavy glazed and framed Chinese ancestral portrait (or possibly a Hong merchant) seated in full traditional robes with a tiger pelt draped behind. Ink and watercolour figure is wearing a necklace of South Sea pearls with equidistantly-spaced jade disks. Note the fabulous detail in the robe, tiger pelt, the necklace, peacock feather, and hat ornament. Circa 1840. The solid wood frame is exceptionally heavy. Framed painting measures 50 inches by 30 inches (picture is 39 inches by 23 ¼ inches). Unsigned.
