This is unquestionably one of the choicest sterling silver soup tureens we have ever seen. It was made in Italy for Birks of Montreal, circa 1940, and is in the Empire style with a moulded rim and embossed lower body. Just look at the interior! Twin loop handles have leafy decoration at the bases. The leafy decoration continues on the slightly domed cover. Free-standing detachable eagle handle. Diameter 10”. Base diameter 5”. Height to rim 6 ½”. Height to handle 10 ½”. It measures 12 ¾” over the handles. Weight 1816 grams. Marked “Birks Sterling Italy.”
