This pretty comport is unsigned; family tradition holds that it was hand-painted by Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, whose favourite flower was the pansy, but it is more probable that it is part of the original set chosen by Maria Feodorovna for Hvidore. It dates from circa 1900. Provenance: the Byington Collection, acknowledged in: Tsar: The Lost World of Nicholas & Alexandra by Peter Kurth (p. 223); and Olga Romanov: Russia’s Last Grand Duchess by Patricia Phenix (p. 296), by direct descent from Grand Duchess Olga. The comport was made by Bing & Groendal of Denmark. Diameter 9”. Height 4 ¾”. Base 4 ¼”.
