The tole body of the purdonium has been repainted. Very few still retain their original finish. It has cast iron wheels, handles, and foliated finial. The purdonium is named after Mr. Purdon, the Welshman who either devised it or owned the first one in the second quarter of the 19th century. A truly unique Welsh antique. There is no liner with this item. Note the small hole near the base. For a different style of purdonium see item 100018.

A spectacular late 19th century solid ivory box with unidentified gold monogram inset in centre of lid. The bottom part is made from a solid piece of elephant ivory. We have not had the monogram tested, but it is not brass, probably gilt silver or 14kt gold. Length 7 1/8” x 4” wide x 1 ¼” high. There is an tiny repair at the base of the V.

Our rectangular gun-metal cigarette case has rounded edges and sports a blue cabochon sapphire push piece mounted in brass. Three cut gems adorn the face in a floral pattern, undercut from interior – blue, green, red. Length 3 ¼”; width 2”. Apparently unmarked. By direct descent from Olga Alexandrovna, Russia’s last Grand Duchess.

This charming Welsh purdonium or coal box got its name from Mr. Purdon, a Welshman who either devised it, or was the first person to use one. Except for repainting, it is in excellent condition. The original handles are mounted on heads, possibly representative of a Greek or Roman god or goddess associated with fire or the hearth. The original scrolled feet are decorated with lion heads. Samovar rests on a squared base with everted legs. 10 ¾ inches high to the wooden knob; 8 ¾ inches over the handles. The spigot is missing its wooden knob. An early copper snuff or tobacco box of shaped rectangular form 5 1/8 inches by 2 ¼ inches by 1 ¼ inches thick with arched, moulded ends. The hinged lid is engraved with a figure in pantaloons holding a horn; a ladder and elf occupy the upper section. Fine scrollwork at man’s feet. The reverse cover is engraved with fancy scrollwork and a figure holding a spear, point downwards, and two tailed figures in top, centre. Side is engraved in German Gothic script: “HANK:SAR.”
