This is a wonderful Limoges Plate that is completely hand painted, initialed by the artist and dated 1895. This Plate is entitled King Lear. The artist has shown King Lear in what looks to be a Death scene. Bending over the white haired man is one of his daughters - could it be Cordelia? She is obviously a Princess as her clothing is quite fine; she has a long lace veil coming down her back from the crown on her head, a jeweled belt around her royal clothes. Standing in the corner is what looks to be a General. I'm not well versed on Shakespeare plays myself. But this is quite an unusual Plate that is completely hand painted 113 years ago. This wonderful scene is painted on a fabulous old Limoges mold. The artist has painted intricate and painstaking repeating design in Gold all around the border. Added to the Gold design are the highly prized raised enamel turquoise "jewels". This is truly a one of a kind plate that you will never see again.
The Plate measures 8 1/2" wide.
It is in excellent - almost outstanding condition for a plate this old - with no chips, cracks or hairlines. The painting looks as strong & fresh as if it were painted yesterday. There are 2 tiny places where the "jewel" has popped off. The Gold looks very, very good with just minor rubbing to the outside rim of the bottom of the plate.
It is marked with Gerard, Duffraisseix & Morel Mark 1. 1895.
