Rare Karel Appel signed lithograph, circa 1965! This is a great and rare lithograph by listed artist Karel Appel (1921 - 2006). This piece is entitled "Deux Tetes" which translates into "Two Heads". There is a gallery tag on the back of the litho which states "Lithograph Original in Six Colors, Karel Appel, Deux Tetes, No. 432, 1965".

Born Christiaan Karel Appel in Amsterdam, Appel was very influenced by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Jean Debuffet. At 19 years old, he began his studies at the Rijks-Academie in Amsterdam from 1940 to 1943. In 1948, along with Constant, Corneille and Eugene Brands, he founded the Nederlandse Experimentele Group, the magazine "Reflex", which then led to the COBRA movement in Paris.

By the age of 30, he had painted a mural for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and had begun his esteemed recognition in the art world. He was awarded the UNESCO prize at the 27th International Biennale in Venice and first prize at the Guggenheim International Exhibition in New York in 1960. His art has been exhibited worldwide and is in the collections of major museums in the United States and Europe.

A very colorful and powerful example of his work which would elevate any modern home or office decor! On arches paper with impressed mark "L'OEuvre GRAVÉE. Signed in pencil "24/99" lower left corner and "Appel" in the lower right corner in pencil. Excellent condition with fresh museum quality framing. Dimensions: 22-1/8"H x 29-7/8"L.
