This is a wonderful and rare find of studio pottery by one of the Masters of the American Studio Movement (1930-1972). This is a monumental stoneware footed bowl that was hand turned and decorated. Per the Vasefinder Museum, "Paul Volckening was born in Minneola, New York. He received his B.A. from the CCAC and later, received his M.A. at Mills College, where he was a student of Tony Prieto. He was also a resident artist at the Archie Bray in the early 1950's. He taught for many years at New Mexico Highlands University. Without a doubt, Paul Volckening is one of the important functional artists of the Movement. Currently, this artist resides in New Mexico. He exhibited at the Association of San Francisco Potters in the 1950's. Exhibited at the Nationals in 1954 and 1956". The pictures do not do this work of art justice, it is blue with a lite green glaze and has a modern look to the incising around the bowl. The footed bowl stands 9-1/2" tall and is 11-1/8" across and the bowl is 6" deep. This is a wonderful mid-century compote to add to your studio ceramic collection and a great decorative item. Signed on the bottom inside rim "Volckening". Buyer pays shipping, handling, and insurance.
