This is an exquisite designed sterling silver spoon for YALE. The top of the handle is formed into a wreath with the letter Y in the center. There is a ribbon design with two paddles for the rest of the handle and a plain bowl for the spoon. The back of the handle is stamped Sterling and no hallmarks. This spoon measures 5 1/4" long and dates to the turn of the century.

Early sterling silver hallmarked spoon by S. H. Kirby, silversmith. Born in 1843, S.H. Kirby was active in New Haven, CT in the 1870's & 1880's as a retail jeweler and silversmith. This spoon is marked "YALE" in a stylized blue enamel on the end of the handle. The name "Ruth" is engraved in fancy script on the gold washed bowl of the spoon. This is an early Yale silver spoon with an attached pole and flag. The flag is enameled in blue with "YALE" in silver letters and a pole with ball top. A twisted handle was formed starting from the flag and ending half way down the handle. The bowl is gold washed and the back of the handle is stamped "Sterling" with no hallmarks. The spoon is 4-1/8" long and is in excellent condition.

This is a wonderful silver desk item from the past that adds a touch of elegance to any desk. This was made by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. Wallingford, CT 1895-1898. They manufactured silverplate and sterling wares. This company was eventually absorbed into International Silver and they used this mark into the 20th century.
