Smell the flavors in each of the 6 spice tins stored away in this lovely old spice box. I have been told this Tin Spice Box dates back to the 1800’s and the aromas still float out when the top is lifted. It’s NOSTALGICALLY WON-DERFUL! The box is painted black enamel with a decorative, raised design on top. The design is an old tarnished gold colored stripe and edged in Asian red. Around the bottom section there are also pin stripes of gold. There is a handle for lifting the lid and a clasp where one could, if they wanted, place a small lock. From what I have read spices were in fact, many times locked away for safe keeping. The outside dimensions of the box measure 10-7/8 inches long by 7-7/8 inches wide by 4-3/8 inches high. Inside, there are six smaller tin boxes. Each box is hinged and measures 3-1/4 inches long by 3-1/2 inches wide by 3-1/4 inches tall, including little pull handle that sits on top of each lift up lid. Each box has a reddish, metallic sheen to it. I believe they have been japanned, but I am not certain. Each individual box has a decorative, hand stenciled lettered spice name on top with decorative Tole style design. The spices are: Nutmeg, Cloves, Mace, Spice (I believe this is All Spice), Ginger and Cin’m’n (short for cinnamon, yum). Each spice name is clear and legible. Interior of large box is in what I would consider pretty good condition considering the age and obvious use; the exterior of course is scratched and worn, but there are no dents. This was an exciting find and until it is sold, I will continue to open it occasionally…just to savor the old kitchen aromas.
