This light turquoise bullicante cigarette holder was once part of a set that included an ashtray and a light. The beautiful symmetry of the controlled bubbles and the way the color and gold aventurine seem to gather around their edges marks it as the work of Alfredo Barbini, one of the foremost Murano glass artists in the mid-20th century. The glass of this amber controlled bubble vase is very thick, and the bubbles gradually elongated as the liquid glass was stretched to make the 3 points of the rim. Its beauty is enhanced by the thick ribs that give it a gourdlike shape; in Italian Glass, Century 20, Leslie Pina attributes similar vases to Alfredo Barbini (p. 28). This is one of Barbini's bullicante ashtrays in turquoise with a folded rim. It's 5" long, 4" wide, and 2" high. The controlled bubbles are highlighted with gold aventurine, starting as little more than pin points in the bottom and gradually increasing in size toward the rim. The pestle is 3.5" long and is filled with silver aventurine (photos 4, 5, and 6). One end of the pestle was ground and polished, but not very well. This elegant amethyst pitcher by the glass company, Riekes-Crisa, circa 1975, is perfect for serving margaritas. Apparently Riekes-Crisa was a Murano glass company. At least, there seems to be some connection: on p. 198 of Italian Glass, Leslie Pina shows a seal designed by Licio Zanetti [1960s] that bears the Riekes-Crisa export label, and identifies it as a Murano company.
