Circa 1940’s-50’s, this 1 ½ inch wide designer vintage Monet hinged bangle has a very domed top, creating quite an Art Deco appearance to it. The shape of the bangle is slightly oval, with an inside diameter of 2 ½ inches closed. Open it expands to 4 inches, for ease of getting on an off.
The top of the Vintage Monet bangle is hammered copper, which is quite unusual. There are two very small areas on the copper that are a bit darker than the rest of the top, which does not detract from the elegant look of this vintage costume jewelry bangle. (see photo). On the front of the bangle, permanently attached through the entire bangle, is a 2 ½ inch long very retro looking chrome swan with fabulous detailing. This chrome swan adds such a fabulous contrast to this Monet bangle.
The Monet company was originally founded in Providence, RI in 1929 by two brothers, Michael and Jay Chernow. At the beginning of this company, the official business name was Monocraft. The Monocraft company produced gold plated monograms which were attached to handbags in the store at the time of purchase. The business expanded and the company became well known as a manufacturer of quality initials for purses. The Chernow brothers, seeing a distinct advantage in the marketplace, began manufacturing jewelry under the name Monet around 1937. Much of the 1940's jewelry used silver as the base metal.
The use of hammered copper and chrome is quite elegant and unusual in this vintage Monet costume jewelry bangle. It will stand alone and be so striking.
Except for the aforenoted small darkened areas, this Vintage Monet bangle with its fabulous chrome swan on top, is perfect.
