This stone has a very rich hue which I will describe as being between Burgundy and Rust Brown. The color is quite intense and does not present the orange hue often found in Carnelian gemstones. The stone is oval and more or less flat with the deeply carved image recessed into its top. When pressed into wax the resulting image of a Roman Soldier’s head appears in relief. The use of wax to sign or seal a letter or document was a common practice for many centuries.
The stone is set in a smooth, polished oval bezel measuring 18mm X 15mm (11/16” X 5/8”). The wide flared band has a curved top line where the band connects to the ring’s shoulders. The band tapers from 10mm down to 4mm. This English hand-made ring weighs 6.6 Grams; it is a size 8 ˝ and it can easily be sized up to a much larger size or down a few sizes by a qualified jeweler.
The ring is in excellent condition, showing minor signs of the gentle use it has had for well over a hundred years; it seats itself well on the hand and is very comfortable to wear. This is a classic design and a nicely constructed piece of fine antique jewelry which will bring many compliments to its owner. Seal rings are always sought by collectors and their occurrence in the marketplace is dwindling. This is a fine piece to add to any antique jewelry collection.
Look for another seal ring which will soon be available as an independent listing in this Ruby Lane shop.
Free shipping and insurance for this ring are included to most destinations. Please inquire for cost of shipping to other places.
