This attractive pendant featuring the number "13" was created to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel. As Israel was founded in 1948, it dates the piece to 1961.
It is also an unusual and quite beautiful symbol of the coming of age of a Jewish boy or girl. The hollow form, round fob has a 7/8" diameter and a thickness of 1/8" and weighs 4.3 Grams of 14K Rose/Pink Gold. The face of the coin-like pendant has deep engraving with the number thirteen (13) artistically scribed between two laurel branches, underneath this are four characters from the Hebrew alphabet. All of this engraving is enameled in the deepest blue against a textured background of gold. The style of decoration, and the manner in which it is constructed, lead me to believe that this is quite an old piece of jewelry. I believe that it dates to the early 1900's.
Bar Mitzvah literally translates to "son of commandment" and implies "responsible male."
According to Jewish Law, every Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah at age 13. As a bar mitzvah, he becomes obligated by God's commandments - as prescribed in the Torah and as interpreted by Moses, the Prophets, the Sages and the Rabbis. The bar mitzvah boy also becomes eligible to count in a prayer quorum (minyan), lead prayer services, testify before a religious court, and so on.
A Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah automatically upon turning 13 years old. No ceremony is needed. However, in the 15th century, it became customary to mark the occassion of a boy becoming a bar mitzvah. Over the centuries this custom has evolved.
Modern bar mitzvah celebrations may include a lavish party. Sometimes all the friends and family of the Bar Mitzvah are invited and frequently it becomes an appropriate occassion on which to bestow a gift as one might on a special birthday.
Bat Mitzvah literally translates to "daughter of commandment" and implies "responsible female."
According to Jewish Law, every Jewish girl becomes a bat mitzvah at age 12 - a year earlier than a Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah due to the fact that girls mature earlier than boys. As a bat mitzvah, she becomes obligated by God's commandments. Everything else that is said for the boy's bar mitzvah is true for the girl's bat mitzvah.
This attractive pendant would be a fine keepsake memorializing this special day.
