This 1885 Regule tobacco jar was made for a captain of the French Calvary upon retirement with his initials of M R. The scene is an officer on horseback
riding away so you only see his back on both sides of the jar framed with oak branches and acorns . There is a horse shoe a one side as well as his initials. The lid is oak branches and with a vine handle. It is has an unusual almost log shape and the front is designed so the scene is like a turning page. A highly symbolic piece. This was acquired from
the estate of his great grandson in France.
Regule is a resistant and stainless alloy containing lead, invented about 1835 in England, which often replaced bronze as well for artistic works as for certain usual objects,
and makes a beautiful finish.
It has a wood bottom for the preservation of the tobacco and may have had the velvet added later by his wife.
It is in good shape with slight wear to the finish but it is still
a beautiful, unusual and decorative piece. It is 4 1/2 inches tall and 5 inches wide.
