We acquired these two wonderful signed antique mezzotint colored prints at a Massachusetts Estate Auction. They are signed in the lower right corner by artist/engraver Thomas G. Appleton. Thomas Gooch Appleton (1854-1924) was a very talented English mezzotint engraver. His dramatic use of light combines with a delicacy of execution to create beautiful images which echo the subtle effect of painting. His loose painterly approach is extremely difficult to accomplish with mixed method engravings. His heavy mixed style of engraving deepens the contrast of his plates. He used stipple, etching, and mezzotint to produce a luxurious effect in his plates. This complex process makes his prints have rich tones and tangible textures. The images in these prints are a testimony to his talent. Both prints measure 15 3/4" X 11 3/4", they are matted and measure 21" X 16 1/2", they both have a wooden frame that measures 22 1/2" X 18" X 1/2" with wire hangars and glass to protect the print. Both prints have small cursive writing on the top of them that states: London Published 1907 by Henry Graves & Co. Ltd. 6 Pall Mall S. W. Printed by A. Satman Paris. Embossed in lower left corner on both prints: PRINTSELLERS ASSOCIATION with initials in the middle of each - one being CRJ and the other print being FNO. These prints are perfect for your wall - they are A-1 quality in workmanship. Ideal for your collection.
Thomas (Gooch) Appleton-(b Shalford, Essex, 1854; d 1924). English mezzotint engraver. He worked in London from the late 1870s until 1903. His early work includes prints after Luke Fildes (e.g. Roses, exh. RA 1877) and Frederic Leighton. Although he continued to engrave contemporary work, he achieved prominence with his prints after 18th- and early 19th-century English portrait painters, copying works by, among others, Thomas Lawrence and George Romney. He exhibited 13 engravings at the Royal Academy between 1877 and 1893 and by 1894 had over 30 prints registered with the Print Sellers Association. The majority of his work was commissioned and published by the leading dealers Henry Graves (1806-92) and Arthur Tooth. The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, both in London, hold examples of his work.
