As Antique Paintings go they do not get much better than this Reverse painted on convex glass Still Life of Raspberries spilled out of a handled mug onto the ground. We obtained this work from a New York Hudson River Valley Estate Auction and they had attributed it to Sarah Miriam Peale (1800-1885) and after much review, we also agree with this attribution. Sarah Peale was one of the many Artist descendants of Charles Wilson Peale. She was born in Philadelphia and became one of America's first professional female artists and a leading portrait painter of her day. She also did still lifes. Her art career lasted nearly sixty years, and she supported herself financially and successfully competed with male painters of that time including John Wesley Jarvis, Thomas Sully, and Jacob Eichholtz. (AskArt) The painting is in near perfect condition having never been exposed to the elements in the air or environment due to the fact that it is in its original enclosed back frame and we strongly believe it has never been out of this frame. The gold gilt ornamented and gessoed frame is about 85 % intact with several areas of missing gold or gesso. Despite this it displays very well as it is. Measurements are 9.50 by 11.50 oval opening sight, 13.50 by 15.25 inches framed overall. One of the best quality art pieces we have offered in a long time.
