In fact, upon being questioned, I always state my nationality as Sarawakian as versus Malaysian. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that East Malaysia is completely separated from the West by quite a bit of water. Or that our cuisine is totally different, our lingo, our racial diversification. Whatever the reason may be, I've never been very patriotic.

Which brings me to the topic at hand. The Bunga Raya aka Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis aka Queen Of The Tropics is my national flower. For a long time, I thought it was incredibly hideous. All red and yucky. But in the yard of my old house in Houston, my man has hedge upon hedge upon hedge of hibiscuses. In red, in pinks, yellows, white with speckles, hybrids - you get the idea. So I suppose they grew on me :)

As did this necklace. I worked on it sporadically across a 3 week timeframe, in between this and that, and I love it!!!

This Bunga Raya of mine is a cross-pollination of MAGNIFICENT Polished Chalcedony Briolettes, in generous plus sizes, with 18K Rose Gold Filled Wire (ran out of the solid gold variety). Peppering the petals are beautifully faceted Burmese Ruby Rondelles and 18K Gold Filled Cubes. Dainty wisps of curls and whirls further pretty up the main petal as, towards the center, the duo of Polished Rainbow Fluorite and Polished Amethyst Briolettes flirts shamelessly.

My love for the asymmetrical makes itself known here too. The left features a procession of Polished Center-Drilled Watermelon Tourmaline Nuggets interspersed with more Ruby Rondelles and a single Polished Rainbow Fluorite Briolette. The right side showcases more Polished Watermelon Tourmaline, Rubies, another Polished Rainbow Fluorite and a second Polished Amethyst Briolette.

A true feast for the eyes.

The Clasp, made by me, features a couple of 18K Gold Filled Cubes and a final Polished Chalcedony Briolette charm drop. The luscious flower pendant measures approximately 2.75" tall by 2.5" wide. Measuring around 18" in length, Bunga Raya, Bunga Kebangsaan is made predominantly from 18K Rose Gold Filled Wire with touches of 14K Yellow Gold Filled Wire. All chains are 14K Yellow Gold Filled.

~ About The Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis ~

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (family Malvaceae), known colloquially as the Chinese hibiscus, is an evergreen flowering shrub native to East Asia. It is also known as China Rose and Shoe Flower, and is the national flower of Malaysia. Called Bunga Raya in Bahasa, Sembaruthi in Tamil and Mamdaram () in Telugu, these blooms are used to shine shoes in parts of India, as well as for the worship of Devi. Hibiscus flower preparations are also used for hair care. The flowers themselves are edible and used in salads in the Pacific Islands.
