Finely Carved Nephrite Jade & Silver Vermeil Brooch

An elegant brooch carved from jade in the 19th century and set in fine vermeil silver in the early 20th century. This especially lovely piece gives you a lot to smile about. It begins with the pleasant countenance of a serene buddha who is expertly carved from gorgeous green nephrite jade and continues throughout the delicate filigree work surrounding him.

The brooch has been drilled with two very tiny, unobtrusive holes which leads me to believe it was used for another purpose at an earlier time. Perhaps it once served as a piece of netsuke and was then later converted as we see here. I have seen other period brooches with these same puzzling characteristics.

Marked simply "Silver" and "Made In China" on the reverse side, this fine piece measures 1 1/16 inches wide by 7/8 inches in height. It is altogether beautiful and has no notable condition flaws of any kind. Please click on the photo to see additional, enlarged views.
