Superb, late 19th / early 20th century, English red earthenware baking dish with trailed slip decoration. This rather large rectangular dish with its concave sides and profusely decorated interior is typical of those that were produced in Northern England. This traditional country pottery piece has a thick-bodied and press-molded form that is clear glazed on the interior and sides. The trailed design is wonderfully fluid and irregular –just as one would expect to see on a functional and unpretentious piece of rustic pottery. There are some areas where the slip has flaked off –mainly at the end points where the trailed slip would have been the thickest and most raised. There are typical imperfections as well - in the form of clay debris on the base and a crack in the rim that was formed during the manufacturing process. These characteristics are not only typical and to be expected but are part of the reason why we find rustic pottery so charming! There are no chips or other cracks.
Measures 20” x 15 ˝”.
