19th century French glazed earthenware olive oil or water jug with slip-trailed decoration. The jug is dated 1831 and is a good example of what was once a commonplace household and utilitarian object. Hand-thrown and pot-bellied with pleasing proportions, it has a pure and functional form with a restrained slip-trailed decoration in cream and brown over mottled terracotta colored glaze. This is a jug that can be used to ground a space - it is also easily incorporated into a collection of yellow-glazed confit pots and other pieces of rural domestic slipware. The condition is very good to excellent and there has been no restoration to what is essentially an honest piece. There is a chip on the base and cracks in the glaze (a few on the exterior base and one in the lower portion of the body, as shown). It is glazed on the inside and as might be expected, the base is flaked. Measures 12” in height and 31” in girth.
