PLEASE CLICK TO ENLARGE THE PICTURES AND VIEW THE DETAIL. C.1880. French / Belgian ladies boudoir mirror. This fabulous, highly ornate tri-folding mirror epitomizes the refined elegance of its time. The design encompasses a dual function and when not being used as a mirror, it folds shut to reveal a decorative back panel that functions as a hanging art work. The two outer panels each depict different neo-classical scenes that feature fair maidens and cherubs. The scenes are embossed and lithographed (with a lacquered surface) onto tin plates and enclosed by ormolu frames. The panels are beautifully preserved as are the colors with the surface retaining its glossy sheen. One panel is in pristine condition and the other showing slight wear in the form of minor flakes mostly found on the maiden and one cherub. The center panel has a cloth backing that has frayed in places and the glass is slightly foxed. The design was registered and there is also a patent number stamped on the side of the frame which is difficult to read. The mirror comes in superb condition and is free from restoration or any significant damage. When fully extended, it measures 26 ½” x 11” or 9” x 11” when folded.
