Wall pocket, American Victorian, antique papier mache, circa 1880 - 1890, American made. Size: Shaped backboard is 16" by 12", actual pocket front is 10 3/8" by 9 1/2". Wall pockets became popular as early as the Victorian era. They were put to such practical use as mail, notes and even were popular as slipper holders. This Victorian wall pocket is papier mache, painted with a marbling effect, has decalcomania applied decoration of putti, a maiden, birds and Victorian memorabilia. The finish is aged and original with some hand enhanced painting. The pocket has metal hinges and has cutout design. The ribbon is a 30+ year old replacement. Condition: No damage or repairs.
