Fan, antique hand held, folding, hand painted and embroidered, circa 1895 - 1900. Possibly Japanese. The guards, sticks and ribs are ivory; cut-out and engraved. The guards are 8 3/8" in length. The verso guard has an old repair. The sticks and ribs are plain ivory with no detailing. The off white fabric leaf is hand embroidered and hand painted. There is some discoloration to the mount. See photos. The verso is plain. The front side of the mount is embroidered with flowers and a butterfly both symbolic in Japanese culture. Span of the fan when open is 14 1/2".
