Nippon cake set in white and raised gold. Nippon era, made for export therefore the country of origin was required. Enforcement of the McKinley Tariff Act began as early as 1918, so this set was made prior to 1921 when it was mandatory that all items be marked. More than likely this set was manufactured before and exported after the tariff act went into effect. The backstamp "Maple Leaf" and "hand painted" was first used in 1891. The blue maple leaf identifies that porcelain body blanks were produced by subcontractors. The pattern is stylized flowers in a 7/8" border on the servings and 1 1/8" border on the master. Background is ivory with high relief gold outlining of the flowers and design. The edges of the dishes and border areas are gold leaf as well as the pierced handles of master. Master is 9" in diameter, plates are 6 1/4" in diameter. China is pure white, condition is very good to excellent with slight gold loss on the handles. Set consists of master cake platter and six (6) individual servings. Refer to additional photos. No chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs.
