Antique rosewood American shelf or mantel clock,100% original in near mint condition. Made by William L. Gilbert, Winsted Conn, this is the Star Round Top Extra model. Circa 1870 - 1875. Size: 16 3/4" tall, 11 1/2" wide, 4 1/4" deep. The dial diameter is 5" minute track to minute track, 6 1/2" dial diameter overall. The rosewood veneer case was refinished many years ago. We have rubbed out the finish and applied 3 coats of cabinet wax. It has a very nice warm semi to satin finish, not shiny. The color and grain of the rosewood is wonderful. No damage to the veneer with the exception of two very small chips at the very bottom. Clock has original brass star pendulum, glass, paper label, enameled paint on zinc dial, bell, door knob and hinges. The restored movement is original to the case. The clock is a 30 hour or one day duration with hour chime on the brass bell. The clock movement was disassembled and cleaned ultrasonically, all pivots were resurfaced and polished on a lathe, 14 bronze bushings were installed in worn pivot holes. The verge was stoned and trued to the escape wheel. The clock has a very strong pendulum amplitude and the timekeeping accuracy is amazing for a 140 year old clock. See the photo of the clock movement and see what a professionally restored clock should look like. The original dial was strengthened and one chip under the 12 was touched up. The original door glass has many imperfections and waves which is customary for glass of this age. The paper label on the rear is protected with a piece of clear plastic. This is a very pleasing design and extremely difficult to find, there are not many early Gilbert clocks around especially in this fine condition. The inside backboard retains the original green paper. All of our clocks come with a key and a detailed set of instructions specific to the clock. See photos.
