By Samuel McChord Crothers with original jacket and ten poignant water color illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith. A Massachusetts Unitarian minister, McChord (1857-1927) was widely known at the time as an essayist. Here he examines some of the children in famous Dickens novels. We get to meet once again Pip, David Copperfield, Little Nell, the Kenwigs, and of course, Oliver Twist and Tiny Tim. Each re-visited through a synopsis of these delightful characters. Crothers says that Dickens’ stories are filled with “common people but they are uncommonly amusing.”

Jessie Smith (1863-1935) was a very popular artist becoming famous with her illustrations in Ladies Home Journal and childrens books (see photos for some of the illustrations). Total 259 pages. Original copyright: 1926. Original jacket is tattered and torn, but has done it’s job well over it’s 60-plus years, leaving this book in very good condition for its age. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York. A delightful read for fans of Charles Dickens.
