Wonderful antique sampler sewn by Jane Humphreys in 1870 at the age of 14 and probably born in 1856 or 1857. Original gold leaf frame is badly worn, but has original glass showing bubbles in the glass. The wood covering on the back side is held in by hand made square nails. Corners at the top are coming apart. But it is great to have it all original!

Yarn colors in red, light and dark green, yellow, and orange are still bright and not faded. Cross stitch was done on a white open weave platform. Frame is 14" high and 10" wide.

Has the full alphabet in upper and lower case, and a duplicate set of numbers one to zero. Saying "Watch and pray. Love your enemies to good to them which hate you".

I was told that a Dr. Frederick Humphreys was the author of a book "The Humphreys Family". Book was written in the late 1800's. I have been researching the Humphreys family and they originally came from England and settled in Indiana in the early 1800's.

Sampler will be very carefully packaged to protect the glass.

Buyer to pay by Paypal, money order, or by check. Checks have to be held until they clear - approx. 5 to 7 days. Insurance is a must on this rare item.

Item ID: D175
