Japanese 19th Century Funerary Urn - Gorgeous Moriage Work

Very beautiful late 19th century Japanese funerary urn with lid. It has heavy moriage work, jeweling, highly detailed dragon handles on each side and on top of the lid. On one side there are floral enameled polychrome details with heavy and fine moriage, the other side has two hand painted immortals.

Overall it is 13 1/2" high, urn is 8 3/4" and lid is 5" and sits about 1/4" into the top.

The lid was sealed after the cremated remains were put inside. Some time a long time ago, in the past the lid was pried off, probably by a relative of the deceased, so they could take part of the ashes and have a remembrance. At that time it was resealed and repairs made to the top.

There are some chips to the dragon handles and dragon on top of lid (see photographs).

These foibles certainly do not detract from this very beautiful vibrantly colored and extremely decorative antique. It stands on three small feet.
