Our consignor has asked us to slash the price of this remarkable bulldog!!! This remarkable papier mache French bulldog dates1900-1920. The best example we have seen! Near mint condition with vivid markings and coloring. Hide covered dog has excellent modeling--with muscles in legs, even his ribs show at the sides. Molded toes, lovely dark lines painted to emphasis lines of toes. Rich black ears, black around eyes. Glass eyes are cocoa colored with black pupils. Molded black nose with a little bit of wear to high points of paint. Jutted lower jaw with painted teeth, pink gums. His head nods back and forth, swings slightly from side to side when touched. His original boar hair collar is in excellent condition and gives him a regal appearance. His original chain, when pulled, separates his lower jaw from his upper and creates a "barking" noise. He looks and sounds very menacing! He measures 19" from tip of nose to tip of cropped tail in the back. From ear tip to the bottom of his front paws, he measures about 11~1/2" tall. Small wooden wheels on the bottoms of his paws allow him to be pushed or pulled along. A slightly different marking along the back bone--take a look at my photos. An absolutely marvelous item to display with dolls, bears or even in a collection of other antiques.
