One etching is an exceptionally detailed seascape hand- work of naval ships, schooners, motor launches and other assorted marine vessels complete with all manner of passengers and crew in wonderfully colored period dress coming into a very, very busy harbor.
The other etching is also a meticulously detailed seascape, this one of the Venice Canal and Harbor complete with San Marco in the background. There are many different kind of sailing vessels and of course, as one might expect many different types of gondola's with gondoliers and passengers in period dress and a man walking up steps from the canal into a home... if you have been to Venice well...it is so very special
Beautifully drawn, the brush stroke work is truly superb, the main application of color to these black and white etchings was done with delicate watercolor brushes by a very talented hand,
Unfortunately unsigned , the work speaks to the talent . It is most rewarding to look at these exquisite marine paintings of European scenes and ships, Circa 1860 under a 10X magnification.
Early hand coloring of this exceptional handwork was an extremely costly art which when completed by the artist often tripled or quadrupled the price of the work.
