A strikingly detailed, Spode “Stone-China” plate in superb condition with primary overglaze decoration in gold and red following the style of 18th century Arita-Japanese porcelain. In order to fully grasp its detail, one needs to look at the photo close-ups shown below. The motif on this plate is more formal and much less busy than certain 19th century Imari styles. And the use of very thin red lines to outline all the fine overglaze details gives it a visual appeal that is hard to avoid. Close inspection reveals that there is just enough green, turquoise, yellow, black, violet, and orangish-red added to the floral details to complement the gold and red decoration without making the plate seem too busy.

The shape of this plate is a rounded octagon with well demarcated marly indents that define each segment just like many late 18th century Chinese and Japanese porcelain plates. The clay body, however is Spode’s “stone-china” that was actually first developed by William and John Turner of Lanes End, Staffordshire and subsequently purchased by Josiah Spode of Stoke-on-Trent in 1805. The resulting hard opaque stoneware paste provided British potteries one method to complete with the cheaper oriental porcelains that were flooding markets in Europe and America.

This plate has a considerable amount of gilding added by hand to cover parts of the designs along its rim edge, marly and shoulder. If you look at the photos below, the gilding shows a dark reflection in some shots. The outer edge of the plate has a fine band of red diamond-shaped honey comb motifs with flower centers. Four branches of blossoms on the marly artfully balance the central flowering spray. The very edge of the plate is enameled brown, just like the color used on some 18th century porcelain plate edges and Batavian-style wares. The reverse side of the plate has a double footrim along with Spode’s classic pseudo-oriental mark printed in brownish red over the glaze and the pattern number “2879" hand-painted in orangish-red. The pattern number and Spode mark date this plate to the 1818 to 1820 period. Docs Antiques is pleased to offer this plate to collector or dealer alike. If any Ruby Lane visitor knows the original pattern name, kindly drop me a note – thanks.

CONDITION & SIZE: This plate measures 9 ˝ inches across, stands about 7/8 inches tall at the rim and has a foot rim diameter is 5 ˝ inches. The plate is in excellent condition with no chips, hairlines, cracks, roughness or major productions flaws. The gold gilding is at least 98% complete and the enamel coloring is bright and clean. The plate rim is perfect and the plate has had no repairs or restoration. It is truly a visually striking early 1800s example of Spode’s overglaze enamel decoration that displays superbly.
