Offering distinctive 18th & 19th century pottery & antiques for the beginner, connoisseur or dealer-specialist.
The cup and saucer listed here has a cream colored slip covering a cane colored body which is also typical for these wares. This particular set, however, has no chipped areas to be able to confirm this. Other examples of these wares are typically seen today as small pitchers and small handled mugs or cylindrical cups. Flat ware vessel forms like saucers and plates are very uncommon making this small teacup and saucer set rather uncommon, indeed.
The small looped handle on this cup is cordoned, but its terminals are unembellished. There is a small firing crack in the middle of the handle that is an original production flaw. There is also a minor production flaw on the saucer where the brown slip flows over the turned rim band. In addition, the brown slip on the saucer is darker than the brown slip on the cup (the cream color areas of the cup and saucer match, as does the cup ring to cup base, etc.). These flaws emphasize the older hand crafted methods used to produce them some 80 to 130 years ago. Neither the cup nor saucer is marked with any pottery back stamp. Many similar wares, however were produced in Central Europe in countries such as Czechoslovakia, Bavaria, etc. Some vessels are marked with impressed production codes, numbers and even the country of origin, but many are not. So if you collect these hand crafted, slip decorated, lathe-cut or engine turned small ceramic vessels, then you may want to purchase this unusual cup and saucer example since I can’t predict when another one might come along at the price listed here.
SIZE & CONDITION: The diameter of the saucer is 3 7/16 inches and it stands just 11/16 inches tall with a 1 5/8 inches diameter foot ring. The very center of the saucer is undecorated and slightly recessed to function as a 1 1/8 inch diameter cup ring. The cup has a rim diameter of 2 1/8 inches and stands 1 3/4 inches tall with a 1 inch diameter flat basal foot that is 3/16 inches tall. As noted above, there are some minor production flaws on each vessel that only reinforce the hand crafted methods used to produce them. However, both the cup and saucer are in very fine condition with no chips, hairlines, stains, restoration or repairs. Unusual if they were ever used as toys.
