This little blue ground cream pitcher comes with a legacy of famous names stretching back more than four centuries. In fact, there are two clearly printed marks in purple, a hand painted 8682 (seen in reflected light only) and two sets of small numbers scratched into the glass (520 and 766). The purple printed marks include a Royal Worcester mark of the style used after 1891. In this particular case, there are twenty small dots added around the Worcester mark to indicate that this little pitcher was made in 1911. This first mark also has a ‘51’ in its center to remind us that the Worcester Porcelain factory produced its first wares all the way back in 1751. There is a second purple printed mark on the base of this pitcher and to the left of the Worcester mark. This second mark is the garter shaped mark used by many Staffordshire and British potteries starting in the 1840s. This mark has BIGELOW KENNARD & Co on the garter belt and BOSTON inside the belt with the words ‘MADE EXPRESSLY FOR’ above the belt. The Bigelow, Kennard & Company (1830-1972) was one of the three major 19th century Boston Jewelers and Gold & Silver retailers. The other competitors were Shreve, Crump & Low (1869-pres.) and Palmer, Bachelder & Co (1817-1888). These companies commissioned various prestigious firms to produce wares marked with their names for selling to the wealthier classes in the Boston area.

The pitcher for sale here holds an individual serving size (made for one person) has a light blue ground that is evenly applied and nicely accented with gold. There is a thin gold line highlighting its inner lip, a fine gold band on the rim, two thin gold bands on the base and several fine gold accents on its handle. The use of a single hair brush would have been needed to paint the gold bands given their delicacy and fineness. The gold on this pitcher is the older burnished gold gilding typical found on porcelains in the 1700s and not on common wares produced after 1900. The potting is very thin and verges on egg-shell for the period. How this made it to today without a chip or worst is nearly a miracle. So if you collect porcelain embellished with historical names from two centuries ago, then you may want to purchase this little gem while it is still available and especially because it will capture conversation in most any setting. SIZE: This little pitcher holds about 3 fluid ounces and has a maximum diameter of 2 3/8 inches It stands just 2 1/4 inches tall and has a footring with a diameter of 1 9/16 inches. It is the perfect size to display on a shelf or among other types of table accessories (salt dishes and salts, egg cups, sugar bowls, pepper pots, etc.).

CONDITION: This little Worcester porcelain creamer has no chips, cracks, hairlines, star cracks, stains, repairs or restorations. The gold gilding is more than 98% intact with just some minor loss on the rim. The only other declaration to mention that keeps it from being as perfect as the day it was made 98 years ago are about eight small scratches where something much harder than porcelain rubbed against one side. And so when the creamer is held by the handle with its spout facing the viewer, its left side has a half dozen or so very short scratches all less than 1/8 inches long that have penetrated the blue ground. The scratches are about the width of a thin pencil line and are not very noticeable at an arms length away. Or if one places the pitcher with its right side facing out, then it looks as perfect as the day it was made.
