Offering distinctive 18th & 19th century pottery & antiques for the beginner, connoisseur or dealer-specialist.
The pigment colors on this plate are medium blue and dark blue, a fine Rouen iron red, strong yellow, an olive green, and royal manganese. The only black occurs right where yellow covers blue. The floral painting is executed with both spontaneity and skill not often found on post 1800 replicas. And since the cornucopia pattern is widely published, there are numerous 19th and 20th century examples and intentional replicas on the market today. When the plate listed here is placed next to these replicas, the differences are immediately obvious in the glaze characteristics and the plate blank shape as well as the artistic rendering of the motif. And there are other attributes that also set this plate apart from nineteenth and twentieth century copies. They include pin bar kiln scar attributes, the grand feu palette and the specific motif styles and brush strokes. If this is not enough for the real faience skeptic, then let me add that this plate also comes with my full “satisfaction guarantee” or the buyer may return it for a refund (see full return policy below). So if you enjoy polychrome Rouen faience from the mid 18th century, then you may certainly want to consider purchasing this plate since authentic examples are truly scarcer than hens teeth. Thanks for looking and may you have the best of luck in all your antique searches.
CONDITION: This 240+ year old plate is in excellent condition with just three small rim chips despite centuries of display, handling and care. The largest chip is only 3/8 inch long and just has the glaze popped off the body. All other rim chips are less than 1/4 inch and there are also a few small areas of rim roughness and fritting along the edge. Beyond these minor declarations, the plate has no other flaws and no hairlines, no cracks, no stains, no repairs and no restorations. The glaze is lustrous, the coloring is clean and strong, and wear is minimal and restricted to higher areas on the front of the plate and along the backside of the base where the plate rests. Thanks for looking and I guarantee this “a la Corne” faience plate to be as described or the buyer may request a refund via my satisfaction guarantee return policy as noted below.
SIZE: This plate stands 1 1/8 inches tall (2.8 cm), has a maximum rim diameter of 9 3/4 inches (25 cm).
