Offering distinctive 18th & 19th century pottery & antiques for the beginner, connoisseur or dealer-specialist.
The large bowl listed here also displays several other 19th century attributes that include an underscored rim, strong tan-yellow glaze with fine iron-oxide inclusions and a couple of production flaws (see condition notes below). The rim, base and bands all suggest that this bowl is an American product and it may have been produced by a pottery in Ohio, New Jersey or New England. Some collectors call the dark brown bands 'mocha' after the use of this term for various slip trail designs on 19th century pottery. So whether you are a beginning collector, established dealer, or simply enjoy displaying yellowware as kitchen accents, you will be hard pressed to find a larger bowl for less, especially one with a full satisfaction guarantee like Docs Antiques or simply return it (see return policy details).
SIZE & CONDITION: This bowl stands a full 5 3/4 inches tall and has a rim diameter of 12 3/8 inches and a 6 3/8 inch diameter foot ring. The base is recessed upward about 5/16 inches. It is in very good condition with a clean, bright glaze and modest wear suggesting that the bowl was primarily used for show or special occasions rather than daily cooking. It has no repairs or restorations and just two short, very tight 1 inch hairlines along the rim (see photo with pencil pointing to the more visible hairline). There is also an 1-inch chip on the footring (see photo with pencil pointing to footring - chip is mainly on side of foot ring) and a 2 inch glaze production defect on the inside of the bowl where another vessel sitting inside it touched against it during firing in the kiln leaving an oval bare spot or scar. The scar is located at the 12:00 o’clock position on the bowl in the photo where the vessel is viewed looking straight down. Finally, there is a small indentation on the underside of the base that is also from production. It does not show unless the bowl id placed upside. Despite any of these declarations, this bowl displays exceptionally and would certainly be a nice addition to any collection. And should its buyer disagree, they may simply send the bowl back for a refund (see my store’s return policy for full details).
