A Magnificent Demi Parure From the 1950’s. A Classic for Its Time

A real stunning set, that includes a necklace and earrings. They are unmarked but are of designer quality; all one has to do is look at the pictures. In Popular Jewelry, Roseann Ettinger points out, in her introduction to 50’s jewelry, that this time period was known for glitzy jewelry. Salient, to the rest of her introduction is that many jewelry manufacturers were copying the work of the known designers and creating jewelry of the same quality. She continues by pointing out that American designers and others were getting their materials from Eastern Europe, which allowed all the companies to have access to the same fine quality materials, such as crystals from Austria.

This set was most likely not made by a known designer, but given the times, was made with the finest of materials along with the artisanship of the designers. On page 75 in Popular Jewelry we are shown two demi – parure sets, equally as striking, only one is signed; it would be difficult to choose which one is Mazer. This set as the other two is just as amazing. It is made of gold tone metal. It has a snake chain that leads to large faceted, prong set oval rhinestones that appear to twist and turn. Accenting the rhinestones are baguettes that enable the illusion of three dimensionality The necklace has a hook closure.

The earrings are as fabulous, perhaps even more so than the necklace. The outer rim of these round earrings is made with small faceted prong set emerald cut rhinestones. Gold tone mesh separates the outer rim from a domed shape three dimensional center of small round faceted prong set rhinestones, which are layered and ending with one rhinestone at the top.

The necklace measures 15”. The earrings measure 1” in diameter. The advantage of this suite is that it is glitzy, and yet classic and elegant at the same time. The style and grace is quite special; see if you don’t
