This is an ornate detailed sash pin with a C-clasp. Sash pins were worn to hold a ribbon like material that women wore around their waists from the late 1800’s to the mid nineteen teens. I actually think of them worn in the 1920’s by the flappers, but that is already later than height of the popularity of these sash pins. This sash pin is made of brass and it is very detailed; looking very much like a family crest. Such symbols as spears, crowns, flowers all seem to tell a story. The fun might be to come up with your own story.
Another interesting fact about this sash pin is how the sky blue faceted art glass is held in place. There are two thin brass arrows, that are shaped to take into account the faceting of the art stone. This, of course, allows the light to enter through the faceting on the sides, which generates more light and creates a richer look .It is hard to tell how the design was created; whether it is a repouse or a stamped design. The only visible clue is that the back of the brass is very detailed; similar to the way repouse might look.
The sash pin is 3” long and 2” wide. It is a beautiful piece with a lovely patina.
