Here are some of the terms postcard collectors commonly use.
DEFINITIONS OF CONDITION USED IN DESCRIPTION FOR POSTCARDS.

Postcard Grading:

Mint: A card that is mint in condition, is absolutely perfect or flawless. No writing on the card front or back.

Near Mint: Near Mint condition, has almost no wear, extremely light aging and/or very faint album marks.
No writing on the card front or back.

Excellent: Very nice card with no bends or creases. Basically a clean fresh card. May have very tiny corner tip wear.

Very Good: Corners may be rounded. Any creases are almost undetectable and does not detract from the appearance of the card.

Good: Corners may be blunt or rounded with bends and/or creases on the card and specks of paper loss.

Fair: Worn in appearance, with creases and bends more pronounced, corners more rounded, with a probability of some sort of soiling.

Poor: Very poor with excessive soiling, stains, and/or heavy creases.

Undivided Back Era (1901-1907)
Starting in December of 1901 the words “Post Card” were printed on the back of privately printed cards. These cards had undivided backs. The address was written on the back of the card and the message was written on the front.

Divided Back Era (1907-1915)
With the divided back the address and the message appeared on the reverse side of the postcard. Post Card collecting became very popular. Normally no white border on these cards. European cards started dividing postcard backs one year earlier than the U.S.

White Border Era (1915-1930)
Collecting of postcards began to dwindle. These cards are generally of poorer quality and reprints of earlier cards, typically view/scenic cards.

Linen Era (1930-1945)
These cards have improved quality because there were improvements in printing technology. Linen like paper was used for cards with cheap ink. Cards from this era that have recently gained popularity are: Roadside America, Comics, Advertising and Blacks.
