This is one of the nicest and most colorful art nouveau / pre-art deco glass pieces we ever had to offer. The glass factory 'Verreries et Cristalleries de Saint-Denis' near Paris was acquired in 1864 by the talented glassmaker Auguste Legras. In 1900, his son Charles Legras succeeded his father at the head of the company which in the meantime had absorbed several other glass factories. Progressively, with 1500 workers and 150 decorators, Legras had become the most important art glass factory in France. But it was in Saint-Denis where the most prestigious art glass pieces were produced. Although Legras invented and patented an impressive number of methods of manufacturing and decorating glass, his hot enameling application of floral motifs in thick relief remains Legras' favorite and most used method for its artistic creations. This bowl was made between 1900 and 1914 in Saint-Denis. The ground of the frosted glass is a soft dark yellow that enhances perfectly the vivid colors of the floral decor which is enameled by hand and repeated three times on the bowl. The mark SD in brown enamel stands for Saint-Denis. The bowl is 8" (20 cm) in diameter and 3½" (9 cm) high. It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks and only a tiny bit of black painting loss at the very bottom of the bowl's foot (which could be ex-factory). It weighs about 600g and will ship PRIORITY insured airmail for $24 in the countries neighboring Switzerland and $38 elsewhere in the world, except for Australia, Asia, Africa and South America where it will be more. Don't miss out this great example of authentic French art glass!
