This piece was created in France at the beginning of last century. It was made from very thick light chocolate brown glass overlaid with etched trees, rocks and landscape. The relief parts are accented in darker shades of brown. This piece is signed Thouvenin in cameo, a big name among the French glass makers. With Paul and Albert Thouvenin, the sons of Adrian Thouvenin (director of the glass manufacture Vallerysthal from 1859 – 1877), the Thouvenins were a renowned dynasty of glass makers in the Alsace-Lorraine region. Their name has been mis-spelled in the Berniece and Henry Blount French Cameo Glass book: Chouvenin instead of Thouvenin. The history of the Thouvenin glassmakers is very vague: after the French-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Vallerysthal was all of a sudden German and the Thouvenin (father and sons) had to leave for political reasons. In 1887, Paul and Albert Thouvenin took over a company in Vierzon (Cher) under the name 'Les Fils d'Adrien Thouvenin'. The company closed in 1957. See the canalweb18 website. Our vase can be dated from 1900 -1920 although we think it has not the style of 20s art deco vases and we are convinced it is more in the 1900s style. The vase has a diameter of 4½" (11½ cm) and a height of 5" (12½ cm). It is in good vintage condition with only one tiny chip on the top of the neck and a slightly bigger surface chip on the side of the neck (see in the 6th picture in contre-jour) It will ship PRIORITY airmail fully insured from $20 to $40, according to the land of destination. A good honest and genuine piece of glass history for your collection!
