What an adorable and colorful little picture frame! The art of micromosaic jewelry and vanity items dates back to the end of the 18th century. It became fashionable when the remains of Pompeii were discovered in 1748 under the ashes of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, and the first micromosaic pieces made in Naples and Rome were miniatures of temple ruins and copies of the frescos found in the villas of Pompeii. Later they became highly desirable "souvenir" items bought by tourists visiting Italy ...

This adorable paperweight probably dates from the early 19th century. It would look great on an antique desk …. to prevent love letters from flying away! It is beautifully made and the very realistic bronze Irish setter curled up on the oval marble plinth is to die for! It has a nice weight of 790 g and measures 5½" x 3¾" (14 x 9½ cm) and 2" (5 cm) high. It is in very good vintage condition except for a chip at the back bottom of the marble (see picture).
