This is the most beautiful Hand mirror I have ever had! The piece dates from the Victorian period and is Circa 1860-1880. The Ormolu frame is highly detailed and the hand painted Ivory miniature is a true piece of art. This is unquestionably museum quality. The portrait depicts a woman in Heaven being kissed by a cherub, or Putti. This is the most incredible painting. When you look at the painting under a loop, or high magnification the first thing that strikes me is the amount of detail that illuminates from it. Every single black curl on the ladies head is simply spectacular. You can see every single hair so delicately and brilliantly painted. Her eye is memorizing and you can clearly see her eye lashes and eye brows. Talk about a "lover's eye!" The figures are encircled in white puffy clouds. The winged cherub is gently yet intensely kissing the lady.
The piece is signed by the artist Lucas. Although considered a miniature the painting is quite large. The Ivory wafer alone measures 3 1/2" x 3 1/2." The mirror measures 11 1/4" long to the end of the Chatelaine ring x 4 3/8" across. The Ivory is covered with glass. The metal I believe is brass however it is very heavy. The mirror is thick and heavily beveled. There is some slight silver loss to the mirror but fortunately at the edges. This of course is very common on mirrors from this Circa. The Ivory is in perfect condition.
This simply put, this is Grand! Please feel free to ask questions. Enjoy.
