The Coolest ART DECO Hall Tree, All Aluminum, with mirror and six hangers

$1,100 USDThe Coolest ART DECO Hall Tree, All Aluminum, with mirror and six hangers

Collectibles
This is it, why look further? As you may know already, the French made a host of aluminum hall trees during the forties and perhaps even the fifties. Who knows, maybe they started all this in the thirties? Anyway, we're talking that era. This one is the Grandaddy of them all, the best of the best; you see one of these for a hundred of the plainer ones. The others looks quite tame by comparison (read: boring, but functional). I've replaced the mirror on this one, so it's brand new. There are a ...
Four French Dining or Side Chairs, High Style Art Deco

$2,700 USDFour French Dining or Side Chairs, High Style Art Deco

Collectibles
Let my project become yours, and you'll have one of the finest set of French Art Deco dining chairs around (New York, are you listening?). This configuration, as you're aware, is the quintessential Deco chair style. And comfortable, lemmie tell ya! No problem with those three-hour dinners. The seats pop out for refurbishing and reupholstering. Delicate, elegant, these chairs will wow your clients and even your three friends not in the business. As you can see, one chair has a bit of a ding on ...
French Art Deco Chandelier, Bronze fittings with Acid-etched Bowl by Daum

$6,700 USDFrench Art Deco Chandelier, Bronze fittings with Acid-etched Bowl by Daum

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
It's rare in a chandelier that both metal fittings and glass reach "high art" territory, but in this instance that excellence has, on my humble opinion, been achieved. The metal is all finely cast bronze, with superb artistry and craftsmanship in place, and I've just had it refinished in brushed nickel, then added my special patina so that it doesn't have that "born yesterday" look that, sadly enough, you so often find when antiques have been replated. The glass bowl, nicely signed Daum, has ...
'50's Brunswick Bowling Alley Scoring Stand, Decorator's Delight!

$375 USD'50's Brunswick Bowling Alley Scoring Stand, Decorator's Delight!

Collectibles
Hey, is this not the coolest thing you've seen in a long while? I bought it at Brimfield about a thousand years ago, intending to restore it and sell it for thousands, but here I am giving it away. Too many cool things, not enough time! If you have the right spot for it (put it on a plinth and use it for a phone book stand, or the greetings desk of a tony restaurant), and the wherewithall to restore it (strip it, polish the solid aluminum base, maybe even nickel plate the metal spring clip at ...
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier with 6 Mottled Glass Shades

$4,800 USDFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier with 6 Mottled Glass Shades

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
This totally unique lighting fixture, I have to say (as I wax poetic), is one in a million!! I purchased it in Rouen, northwest of Paris. The mottled glass shades are unsigned, but we professionals know who made them (see below). The wildly geometric metal, solid brass with its original chrome plating (somewhat compromised), takes us to dizzying Art Deco/Moderne heights. Pass the smelling salts!! It's about 31 inches long, about 30 across.
50's-style Mid-Century Adjustable Floor Lamp

$295 USD50's-style Mid-Century Adjustable Floor Lamp

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Here's a very versatile floor lamp, mid-century American. There's a pivoting device where the arm meets the shade that allows you to angle the shade down or up and you can swing the arm around any old way you want. AND, you can lift the arm up or push it down into the main shaft. It travels somewhere around 7 inches without a problem. As you can see there's a ring inside the shade which has a tiny threaded screw-hole in it. My presumption is that originally there was a diffuser there, but ...
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier with Egrets

$4,800 USDFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier with Egrets

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Yeow! Four graceful egrets carry their booty off to build their Art Deco nests... This rare French chandelier was in restoration* for well over a year (easy does it, Jacques!), and just look how it's turned out!! I'm happy, can you tell?! It hangs about 33 inches long and it's about 30 across. The finish is my famous brushed nickel over the original solid brass (which was chrome-plated when it was made), aged with my secret patina so it doesn't look like it was plated yesterday. The glass has ...
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, Wrought Iron with Muller Shades

$6,400 USDFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, Wrought Iron with Muller Shades

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Hard to believe, but I had an identical fixture about five years ago, with four Delatte shades; but this one, with these four extraordinary Muller shades, eclipses it! The metalwork, all hand-wrought, solid iron, brings to mind the antics of the Greek god Hephaestus -- you know, the crippled, ugly old curmudgeon who hung around his dark workshop creating mind-altering works of the sheerest beauty. Every inch is worked, and the little curls are fine as jewelry. As for those extraordinary shades, ...
Set of Faux-Bamboo Framed Copies of Ancient Japanese Woodblock Prints

$485 USDSet of Faux-Bamboo Framed Copies of Ancient Japanese Woodblock Prints

Fine Art:Printmaking
These four scenes are famous ones in Japanese art. Two are from the Edo period, 1603-1867 (those with the ladies and the boat) and the others are from the Kamakura Period (with the horse) and the Heian Period, 794-1192 (the men playing). These prints were probably made in the 50's or 60's, but that's just guesswork, mostly based on the apparent age of the frames. The prints seem to be of very high quality with what appears to my unschooled eye as some hand-painted embellishments. On the back of ...
Stella -- Ant. Nelson's Compelling Art Nouveau Statue/Lamp of the Lady Herself!

$4,900 USDStella -- Ant. Nelson's Compelling Art Nouveau Statue/Lamp of the Lady Herself!

Antiques:Lamps, Lighting
So-named according to the tiny bronze plaque at her foot, "Stella" stands almost 26 inches high on her attractive red marble base which is 7 inches in diameter. She's signed by the well-known and respected French Art Nouveau artist "Ant Nelson" (Alphonse Nelson, 1854-1919), and is cast in white metal, finished with a rich bronze verdigris patina. The ribbon above her head has three small star-shaped cut-outs, behind which is a small sheet of deep amber mica, which shades the light from a small ...
French Early 20th Century Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, Wrought Iron with Muller Glass

$5,700 USDFrench Early 20th Century Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, Wrought Iron with Muller Glass

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Here's something to take your mind ever-so-briefly off that "financial crisis" they're all gabbing about, the dullards! Take this Beauty Pill for an instant and forget it all... My prescription: a signed, early 20th Century Muller art glass lighting fixture of extraordinary beauty and rare configuration, with luscious reds and oranges and purples (the yellow you see in the photos is greatly diminished in reality, it's much more like orange). Its wrought iron holder: skillfully, delicately ...
Set of Four Double-Arm Crystal Vintage Wall Sconces

$675 USDSet of Four Double-Arm Crystal Vintage Wall Sconces

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
A customer walked into the shop wanting to sell these and here they are! I've checked the wiring and it's good, but I'm selling them in the "as is" condition I received them. This means (a) they're covered with dust, (b) the inside of the main part of the back plate, which was originally mirrored inside (see photos), is compromised in terms of the mirroring (or "antiqued," depending on your perspective). This results in a widely varied look to the silvering inside the glass back plate. All four ...
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier by Degue; Bowl, Three Shades, Stylized Leaves on M

$5,300 USD Offers ConsideredFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier by Degue; Bowl, Three Shades, Stylized Leaves on Metal

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
I actually have a pair of these dramatic signed Degue chandeliers (this listing is for the one you see in the photos only); and as you might know from looking around, a pair of French period chandeliers is next to impossible to find. They measure 33 long and about 26 in diameter. Substantial dimensions, brilliant metalwork (the stylized leaves above the glass, and the embellishments on the canopy are absolutely "top drawer"). I've restored* the metal to immaculate condition. If you're interested ...
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, an Alabaster Bowl or Two -- Your Choice!

$1,575 USDFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture/Chandelier, an Alabaster Bowl or Two -- Your Choice!

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Choose either of these two French Art Deco alabaster lighting bowls from the 1920's-1930's with the brushed nickel hardware shown. Several years ago I realized that really well-designed ceiling canopies were getting extinct (now even ratty ones are hard to find!), so I had a couple of my best ones recast in solid bronze and then plated in what they call "satin" or "brushed" nickel. It's a beautiful soft finish that makes these fixtures look like "jewelry for the home." Think of this fixture as ...
French Art Deco Opalescent Vase by Pierre d'Avesn

$2,100 USDFrench Art Deco Opalescent Vase by Pierre d'Avesn

Collectibles:Art Deco
This opalescent explosion was crafted by Pierre d'Avesn, who worked under Lalique for a while and eventually went his own way, at one point to head Daum's Lorrain enterprise. His works are legendary, and this is one of his most sought-after pieces. It's about 7 1/2 inches high; this particular one is in mint condition except for one TINY "chip" at the bottom of one of the legs (I put chip in quotes because it could as easily be called a "flake"). The vase has four legs. On the bottom it's marked ...
Bradley and Hubbard Table Lamp with Mica Shades

$2,300 USDBradley and Hubbard Table Lamp with Mica Shades

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Mmmmmm... yum, yum. This all-original and tasteful Bradley and Hubbard lamp isn't signed, but I'll bet the ranch that it's by that revered Connecticut company. All the indicators are there: the superior craftsmanship, the shape and style of the base, the faux marble finish on that base, and the knurled knob adjuster. Then there's the knurled knob adjuster. Did I mention the knurled knob? Well, anyone familiar with B & H knows this is a dead giveaway indicator, close as you get to a bonafide ...
Pair of French Art Deco Black Lacquered Armchairs

$2,350 USDPair of French Art Deco Black Lacquered Armchairs

Collectibles:Art Deco
Two petite French armchairs, in black lacquer and fully reupholstered about 10 years ago (but seldom used); 33 inches tall at the back, 26 deep, and 25 wide. I'll be posting additional photos later.
French Art Deco Panther Statue in Bronze, Grrrrrrrrrr

$6,800 USDFrench Art Deco Panther Statue in Bronze, Grrrrrrrrrr

Collectibles:Art Deco
For a crowd obsessed with speed, economy, power, agility -- all those attributes and more that those lucky people who lived through the Art Deco period revered and emulated, as they basked in the notion that it was a whole new world and ANYTHING was possible -- the panther was one of the quintessential symbols. Right up there with his prey, the gazelle! But the gazelle was a bit too "femme" to be in the same ranks with this power symbol! I've seen a fair number of panther statues during my many ...
Cobalt Blue Chinese Nichols Carpet/Rug 9x12, in Excellent Condition, Art Deco Style and Era

$4,300 USDCobalt Blue Chinese Nichols Carpet/Rug 9x12, in Excellent Condition, Art Deco Style and Era

Collectibles
I suspect that this deep cobalt blue is one of the harder colors to find in a Chinese Nichols carpet, and it's certainly a vibrant and decorative color! Not to mention the various decorations, which are a riot of color and fetching designs. I would term the condition of this carpet "excellent." The carpet must have had a table near its center for a while, as the pile is slightly thicker in that general area, where it was protected from foot traffic. In fact it seems like new in that area. Around ...
Alexandre Falguiere's Diana, French Art Deco Sculpture in Bronze

$1,475 USDAlexandre Falguiere's Diana, French Art Deco Sculpture in Bronze

Fine Art:Sculptures
Falguiere's Diana steals this show, haughty and self-satisfied wench that she appears to be. She's just under 10 inches tall -- and what a deep rich patina, way bettah than any tanning salon could provide. I'm in love with that flippant shoulder, myself. She rests on a small plinth of black plastic about a half inch high. Go ahead, Girl, reject me so I can grovel at your plinth.
Art Deco European Bronze Signed MARTRUS of a Nude Woman

$5,900 USD Offers ConsideredArt Deco European Bronze Signed MARTRUS of a Nude Woman

Fine Art:Sculptures
Caught here dans le jardin (and later, alone with me in my atelier...), she's 22 inches tall, and just resplendent in her mint-perfect verdigris patina. She's signed MARTRUS (Not "Martaus" as I previous stated; I've decided that what I thought was a second "A" really is a second "R." See the photo of the signature.). Her stylized hair and pose (not to mention the quality of her casting) gives her that classic and compelling Art Deco look; the French dealer in Lyon who sold her to me thought the ...
French Art Deco Wall Sconces with Rethondes Art Glass Shades

$2,700 USDFrench Art Deco Wall Sconces with Rethondes Art Glass Shades

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
"Zinger" wall sconces, may I say so? They're made of brass or bronze, with a two-tone patina (the beaks are polished brass and there's a gold finish on most of the rest) and they are about a foot high. French, 'natch. The colors in the signed Rethondes shades are a vibrant, deep orange, going to purple, then finally to a dazzling cobalt at the flared opening. Figural wall sconces are, to say the least, an extreme rarity, and these are as compelling as any that I've seen in a long while. If you ...
Adolphe Mouron, Cassandre, Most Famous French Graphics Designer, for Casino, the Grocery Store

$1,475 USDAdolphe Mouron, Cassandre, Most Famous French Graphics Designer, for Casino, the Grocery Store Chain

Collectibles:Art Deco
The French graphic artist Cassandre, as he signed his work, created such notable posters as Etoile du Nord and Normandie, which have become icons of the Art Deco era. He also designed a poster for the French grocery store chain Casino, which still exists today. But would they still exist without his powerful advertising early on?! He created a poster for them, and this little guy was one of its components. Apparently they had these huge enamel signs fabricated and they put them out in the ...
French Art Deco Nude Lady Figurine by Derenne

$1,175 USDFrench Art Deco Nude Lady Figurine by Derenne

Collectibles:Art Deco
Derenne, according to various sources, is a pseudonym used by Marcel Bouraine, world-class French sculptor. This spelter (white metal) sculpture, one of his most popular (as it's most in evidence now) is entitled "Danse Paienne," or Pagan Dance. OOoooooo. Hey, let's get back to figurines before our minds wander too far, huh? In virtually mint condition, on a black-patinated metal base, she stands 10 3/4 inches high. If you're interested in buying this item, and want close-ups or other photos and ...
Marcel Bouraine's "Awakening," French Art Deco Bronze Sculpture of a Nude Lady

$13,800 USDMarcel Bouraine's "Awakening," French Art Deco Bronze Sculpture of a Nude Lady

Fine Art:Sculptures
Offering Marcel Bouraine's definitive Art Deco bronze statue entitled "Awakening," with its original verdigris patina. The sculpture stands 20 1/2 high, 21 1/2 wide and just over 10 inches deep. She's in excellent condition, the patina having the minor scratches and marks appropriate to its age (the piece was executed in the 1920's). The signature appears in the lower right-hand corner of the base, with the word "BRONZE" stamped into the side, below the signature. Beautifully modeled and ...
Maurice Sievan's Modernist Oil Painting of an American Industrial Scene

$2,700 USDMaurice Sievan's Modernist Oil Painting of an American Industrial Scene

Fine Art:Paintings
In 1940 painter Maurice Sievan and his wife, Lee Culik Sievan (1907 -1990), an emerging photographer, moved from a Manhattan apartment into a new single-family home located in Flushing, Queens. The transition introduced Sievan to a pictorial theme that would preoccupy him for more than a decade: the uncelebrated landscapes of this outlying residential borough of New York City, typified by tree-lined streets, low-rise housing, nondescript shopping areas, and ubiquitous automobile traffic. These ...
Putti Cupid French Dore Bronze Chandelier with Porcelain Roses

$4,700 USD Offers ConsideredPutti Cupid French Dore Bronze Chandelier with Porcelain Roses

Antiques:Lamps, Lighting
P is for Putti, and also for Porcelain (the Precious Porcelain flowers), and don't forget Perfection!!! This is the first bronze putti fixture I've ever had -- they've previously all been fabricated of white metal. And this bronze putti has its original gilt finish in fine condition. Who could ask for more? Our cutie putti hangs 22 inches long.
A French Wine Enameled Plaque of Consummate Distinction -- Le Cep Vermeil apres G. Favre

$2,400 USDA French Wine Enameled Plaque of Consummate Distinction -- Le Cep Vermeil apres G. Favre

Collectibles:Art Deco
How dare you even THINK of opening your wine tasting room or wine bar or even your RESTAURANT without this classic?!! Uh, you would be serving French wines, not Californian. Anyway, this is one of the biggies, the most desired of all, and here it is, in fabulous condition (save a couple of spots where someone threw a wine bottle at it). It measures 27 1/2 wide and 25 1/2 high. Double-sided, with a fastening element at a 90-degree angle.
French Art Deco Lighting Fixture with Millefiore or Czech-style "End of Day" Glass

$5,900 USDFrench Art Deco Lighting Fixture with Millefiore or Czech-style "End of Day" Glass

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
This reminds me of Czechoslovakia's "end of day" or Italy's millefiore glass. But who really knows who "invented" this extraordinary technique of blending and fusing colors? Perhaps it was the French! In any case, I bought this fixture in Avignon, France, so I'll say it was made in France! Note the spare but elegantly ornamented metalwork, which has its original nickel finish in appropriately "antiqued" condition. This dazzling chandelier hangs down around 28 inches and is about 26 across. Of ...
French Art Nouveau Chandelier/Lighting Fixture with Muller Shades

$3,900 USDFrench Art Nouveau Chandelier/Lighting Fixture with Muller Shades

Collectibles:Lamps, Lighting
Wow, is this one a zinger or what?!! SIMPLY gorgeous, Dahlink! And I haven't even rewired it yet! Think what it's going to look like when those signed Muller shades are lit! They've got all the right colors, you know: orange, yellow, blue. The orange verges on pink, the yellow verges on orange, the blue verges on purple, just to keep you interested! Oh, those French. It hangs about 31 1/2 inches long and is about 28 across. Solid brass with a goldish patina. Lots of wonderful ornamentation, as ...
