About Us
T'was a dark and foggy night in San Francisco lo those 31-plus years ago when I was seized by the Art Deco and collecting-as-a-way-of-life bugs. In 1978 I opened Luminescence, on Russian Hill, which I stocked by making buying trips to the far corners of the United States. But my schoolboy French (a mere 11 years’ worth) was bursting to be practiced and in 1991, a few years after I opened Decorum on Market Street, I took off for La Belle France -- and what a mind-bending eye-opener that was! Here I was face-to-face with the most beautiful and well-made things I'd ever seen! Little surprise that (courageous) dealers the world over beat a path to France! Since then I've brought back about 10 twenty-foot containers stuffed to the gills with des belles choses francaises. I've always been especially interested in lighting, so naturally, French (Art Deco) lighting has become my specialty. No one BUT NO ONE restores lighting like I do! In many instances I'm sure it leaves my shop (now Decorum is located at the foot of Russian Hill, at 1400 Vallejo Street, at Larkin, in San Francisco) better than when it was brand new -- once I've refurbished and rewired it, all of which I do myself (except the plating, of course!). By the way, I'm a closet professional packer, and I pack everything myself to survive even the most callous handler or shipper, with a 100% success rate so far.
