This piece is a woven silk period tapestry which has been framed with a black reverse painted liner dated in gilt 1777. The piece from what I can make out of it depicts a convent of some sort. The description can barely be made out on the bottom of the piece where the hand sewn identification is just visible due to shrinkage of the piece. I think it is Spanish. It has been repaired in certain areas but the repairs are not recent. Survival pieces of this age are rare, and the period 20 x 24 inch framing makes this more so.
