A fine and important miniature portrait of a Baltimore,Maryland Revolutionary war soldier John Elliott. On the verso it gives the John's birth date of December 1st 1720 and death at age 105 in 1825 in Baltimore. The inscription goes on further to say he was the great, great grandfather of E.J Elliott. It appears the portrait is on a thin piece of ivory attached to a board. But I certainly could be mistaken. It is housed in a 2 x 3 inch green push button case and is fresh to the market. Nearly impossible to find such early American miniature portraits as nice and identified as this one.We do know according to the archives of the Washington D.C. newspapers obituary notices that John served in the American fight for freedom and arrived in this country at the age of 52 from Germany. Pretty old by today's standard of a soldier, but did not stop old John from taking his
shots at the redcoats.
