This is a set of two small oval sandwich platters, 19th century early English, Coalport, circa 1820 to 1840, produced during the John Rose era.
The platters are 11” long, 8 7/8” wide and 1 ½” high.
The porcelain is an early English soft paste. The blank is rococo, with raised flourishes, scrolls and shell-like embellishments, all highlighted in gleaming gold gild. The shell-like designs are colored a creamy yellow. The rim is a bright green ground.
The flowers on the rim are all hand painted over the green ground, which was a feature of John Rose, used during the period of 1820 to 1825. The flowers are extraordinarily beautiful, and exceptionally well painted. Each cluster of flowers is totally different than any other small cluster of flowers, because they are hand painted by a Coalport artist. There are pink roses, yellow daisies, blue flowers, orange and red flowers, and so on. There are lots of flowers painted over the green ground.
The middle of each platter is glazed white. In the center is painted a grouping of flowers. One platter shows a purple tulip or iris with unfolding petals. There are small blue flowers and green leaves. The other platter show several morning glories in shades of blue with yellow middles. There are small flowers and green leaves. There is more gold trim around the white glaze.
There are no chips, cracks or crazing. The platter with the morning glories has two long scratches in the green ground, which are shown in photos. There are some small dots of missing color from the green ground. The white glaze shows some light scratches caused by utensil marks.
