This is a French Old Paris hard paste porcelain vase. The age is 19th century, circa 1850 to 1870.
The vase is 12” high, 7 ½” long and 3 ½” wide. The body is bulbous, with a solid square foot, and a rectangular neck. The handles are in the shape of curled snakes, enameled in black, and with round circles of gold on the front side.
The front of the vase depicts a hand painted scene of an Asian man, either Japanese or Chinese, wearing a green robe, and standing over a small table in a garden. The painting is framed by a border of porcelain in raised relief that is trimmed in gold. The backside of the vase has the same raised porcelain, but inside the painting is of leaves in the same shades as the pink ground.
There is gold trim around the mouth, neck and base. The inside of the vase, and the underside of the bottom well is glazed white.
There is some aging wear to the gold trim, and some rubbing wear and small spots of missing enamel on the snake handles. There are some glazing imperfections on the interior bottom of the vase.
There are no chips, cracks or crazing.
On the underside is the impressed number “1852.” The number might be indicative of the actual date of the vase.
The vase is unmarked as to the maker, modeler and artist, which is typical of most Old Paris porcelain.
