This is a gorgeous cranberry cut glass vase made by the Bohemian glass maker Joseph Marian Pohl. The date is the 20th century, perhaps as early as 1910, but no later than the 1930s.

The vase is 8 1/8” high and 5 ½” wide at the top. The glass is of substantial weight.

Around the middle of the glass is what is called a pen and ink sketch drawing, a scenic painting that completely encircles the vase. Pohl created this type of decoration. The glass is acid washed where the sketching is applied. The drawing is finely detailed in shades of gold with some red, silver and black.

This specific sketch is of a stagecoach with four horses. There are people on the top and inside the coach. There is a road, trees, shrub, water and clouds in the sky, all finely done. This sketch was later reproduced by the 20th century glassmaker Exbor, however collectors will recognize that this vase is an original Pohl and not a reproduction.

You can view another cranberry piece with a pen and ink sketch by Pohl in the book “La Genie Verrier de l”Europe” by Guiseppe Cappa on page 120.

The rim is polished flat and slightly beveled or chamfered on the inside and with a wider bevel on the outside. Exbor did not manufacture glass in this fashion. Additionally the glass is unmarked as to maker, and Exbor acid etched or stamped their signature on their glass production.

The glass is cut. At the bottom there are 10 panels. At the top, above the scenic sketch, the glass shows a circular thumbprint type of indentation and the cutting above and to the sides of the circles are triangle panels. The mouth is painted in gold.

The bottom is round and polished smooth and slightly indented. There are scratches and wear due to age and use on the bottom.

There are no chips, cracks, nicks or repairs. There are a few tiny air bubbles and it is part of the glass making process.
