This is a beautiful pair of 19th century English pink opaline art glass vases. The date is circa 1890.
Each vase is about 10 high and about 5 ½ wide around the middle.
The glass is a beautiful shade of pink, and if you hold it up to the light you can see your hand right through the glass. The inside has a slight shading of white that gets darker towards the bottom. The pontil is round and polished with some of the white showing through; the type of pontil typically linked to Webb glass.
The shape is quite lovely, round in the middle, indenting in at the top, then narrowing into a neck with a flared mouth. The foot is round and hollow on the inside. The rim is smooth and round, not flat.
The artist hand painted birds and butterflies in white enamel. The birds are perched on branches with blossoms. The vases are painted symmetrically, so that it is obvious they are a matching pair.
Beads of enamel are added to the foot, and another design of enamel is around the neck. There are bands of gold trim around the foot and neck.
There are no chips or cracks. There is some wear to the gold trim around the rims of the mouths. There are a lot of scratches in the glass on the underside foot.
